UNDERSTANDING YOUR HAIR

Winter Curly Hair Care Secrets

Here are 5 tips to help keep your curls healthy throughout the winter period and all year long.

The winter period is an amazing time of year, with an abundance of woolly jumpers, hot chocolate, and most importantly over-eating. Despite this, our hair is definitely battling the cold weather and its number one side effect, dry hair. Textured hair is the most fragile and susceptible to breakage and damage.

In the winter, there is less moisture in the air (and with central heating to stay warm indoors) and your hair will dry up and shrink more than ever. The scalp is more prone to dehydration with the cold weather and intense indoor heat, which can result in a dry scalp and brittle hair. Winter can make the moisture level inside your hair drop to around 10% or lower.

Through our research at That Good Hair, we have compiled 5 winter hair tips to help you beat dry winter hair.

1
Deep Conditioning
Regular deep conditioning is a vital part of caring for your curly hair, especially in the battle against dryness. Deep conditioners, such as our Green Tea conditioner, are rich in strengthening oils that provide excellent protection for your hair, particularly during the harsh winter months.

For enhanced hair strength and resilience, I recommend using a conditioning treatment infused with natural proteins. To fortify your hair, our Green Tea Conditioner contains three key ingredients: Green Tea, Keratin and Avocado Oil. These ingredients offer significant benefits for your hair.

Green Tea is known for its strengthening properties and can help protect your hair from environmental stressors. Avocado oil, on the other hand, is rich in essential fatty acids that nourish and fortify your hair, leaving it more resilient and less susceptible to damage. Lastly, Keratin is a protein found in the hair. Protein-based hair masks are a fantastic way to maintain the integrity of your hair. They can not only prevent damage but also improve your hair's elasticity.
It is important to know when your hair has had TOO much protein.
A tell-tale sign is that all the efforts you make to moisturise seem or have no effect, (or even make it worse). Use a clarifying cleanser to remove protein build-up.

Protective Styling
Embracing protective styles for your hair is a fantastic strategy to reduce stress on your tresses. Whether it's plaits, cornrows, braids, weaves, or wigs, these styles offer effective protection for your hair. However, it's important to remember:
  1. Not to make them too tight
  2. To maintain a clean scalp
  3. Your hair requires consistent moisturising
There are countless resources and videos available to explore various creative protective styles for your hair.

To maintain healthy and well-hydrated hair, especially during this time of year, it's crucial to incorporate hydrating and moisturising products into your styling routine. These products play a vital role in preserving moisture and preventing your hair from becoming dry and brittle. Using a nourishing hair butter can be particularly effective in sealing in that essential moisture, allowing you to preserve your chosen style while keeping your hair well-hydrated. Additionally, our hydration hair mist can be an excellent way to refresh and top up the hydration of your hair as needed.

If you're someone who enjoys flaunting your natural hair while in public, it's a good practice to revert to a protective style as soon as you return home. This not only helps you lock in moisture but can also contribute to accelerated hair growth by preserving its length.
Try not to over manipulate your hair, stick to simple styles and make them sparkle with some hair jewels and accessories.

Co-Washing
If you don't do this already, now is a great time to start. Co-washing is when you wash your hair with a 'cleansing conditioner'. It is a great method for people with curly or colour-treated hair as it doesn't strip the hair of oils like regular shampoos. Many people swear by co-washing claiming it helped to reduce their split ends. If your hair is dry, but wash day is around the corner, this will help to give your hair the added moisture it needs to stay healthy during the winter. A great botanical cleanser to use is our Custom Cleanser, choose a cream consistency when you pick your ingredients. Use a clarifying shampoo every 4-6 weeks to help get rid of any build-up caused by co-washing.
Using a cowash can be a lot more gentle for your hair but washing your hair too much during winter can make your hair fragile and prone to breakage.

Satin Pillowcases
This is a must, if you struggle with satin bonnets, a satin pillowcase can be a great addition to your hair care system. Satin pillowcases are amazing at keeping your hair healthy because they don’t suck out all of your hairs natural moisture. Cotton pillowcases can make your hair even drier especially after it had to deal with the cold outdoors and can make it brittle and dry and that’s something you don’t want. For those of you who don’t like sleeping on anything synthetic, silk can be a good alternative to satin because silk and satin pillowcases are both undoubtedly better than cotton ones. Some people prefer silk over satin, mostly because it is a natural fibre, however, satin still has some advantages.

Vitamins
Your hair is made of keratin, which is a type of protein. Proteins are built from amino acids, which are formed as a result of the reaction of cell enzymes and biotin. The biotin in your body contributes to the production of healthy hair and nails, by providing an essential ingredient in the process of hair growth. There are many 'vitamins' that promote hair growth and health such as Sugarbear hair, Perfectil and Hairburst. These include important ingredients such as Biotin which help improve hair growth and strengthen hair. You could also take Omega-3 fish oil pills, the essential omega-3 fatty acids nourish hair at the follicles, where each strand connects to your scalp and can help strengthen the hair reducing breakage and dryness. Your hair is impacted by your diet the same way your skin is, you can find out more about the best foods for your hair here.
