Why Is My Hair So Tangled?
Tangles, Knots, whatever you call them, they definitely make you want to tear your hair out! Textured hair is particularly prone to tangles because it tends to be drier, which can cause the curls to mat together.

Here are some reasons your hair might be getting abnormally tangled:

⚡You have Protein Overload
Protein overload can cause your hair to become stiff and dry and can cause it to tangle and knot easily. Do the Wet Strand Stretch test to see if you have protein overload and then clarify your hair.

⚡You are Not Using (Enough) Conditioner
Conditioner is necessary to combat the stress and tangles that occur after cleansing with shampoo to soften and protect the hair. Apply conditioner more detangling to give your hair slip to make the process easier.

⚡You Don’t Protect Your Hair at Night
Ensure you invest in a satin pillowcase or bonnet to reduce friction at night and do not go to bed with wet and/or messy hair because it will make detangling in the morning twice as hard.

⚡You Need a Trim
Trimming is a necessary component of keeping curly hair healthy and tangle free. Raggedy ends or split ends are not smooth and will cause friction with other raggedy ends and create fairy knots or tangles.

1
Start at the bottom
Start by dividing your hair into smaller manageable sections and liberally apply a detangling product that can lubricate your hair. This will give your hair slip and protect it from the damage of friction. I would recommend a leave in conditioner or a detangling hair butter like our Custom Hair Butter starting at the ends and slowly and very gently working your way up. This way you can gently remove the tangles instead of aggressively trying to break through them by brushing from root to tip.

2
Use the Right Tools
When detangling your curly hair properly, use the right tools. Since textured hair has a load of bends, curves and curls, thin brushes and combs can cause more damage than good as they don't allow curls to pass through without getting caught. This can cause tension and breakage to the hair. Instead opt for a wide tooth comb or use your fingers to properly remove any knots and tangles. It is really important to be gentle with your hair, ripping it out in frustration or being heavy handed is only going to set you back.

3
Care For Your Hair
If your hair is frequently becoming tangled, chances are they are dehydrated. Establish a consistent hair routine. Consistency and perseverance are the key to growing and maintaining healthy good hair but knowing where to start and maintaining the motivation to follow through are the hard parts. This will help you to look after your hair and keep it tangle free.
