UNDERSTANDING YOUR HAIR

How to Maintain Hydrated Curly Hair in Winter

Discover essential tips and expert advice in our comprehensive guide on how to maintain hydrated and healthy curly hair during the winter months.
During the winter, textured hair, in particular, can suffer becoming more fragile, prone to breakage, and dehydrated. In wintertime, the air holds less moisture, and the warmth of central heating indoors further contributes to parched hair. This combination can lead to excessive dryness and more noticeable shrinkage of your curls.

In fact, during the winter, the moisture level inside your hair can plummet to as low as 10% or even less. Hydration refers to the water content within the hair, ensuring it's adequately supplied with moisture to maintain flexibility and elasticity. Moisture, on the other hand, encompasses the balance of both water and oil within the hair, contributing to its overall health, shine, and manageability.

Adjusting your hair care routine to combat these moisture-stripping effects is crucial. That's why we've developed the perfect products to moisturise and renew your hair AND we found the 3 changes you need to make to your winter hair routine to help you maintain your curly hair hydration levels.
1
Hot Oil Treatments
Hot oil treatments are an effective way to boost hair hydration and improve the overall health and appearance of your hair, especially in the battle against winter dryness.

When oils are heated and applied to the hair, the warmth from the oil opens the hair cuticles, allowing the oil to reach the inner layers of the hair. This helps to lock in moisture, preventing water loss from the hair shaft.

Hot oil treatments also help smooth the hair cuticle, reducing frizz and making your hair more manageable and easier to style. Regular hot oil treatments help to strengthen the hair, making it more resilient and less likely to break. This added strength and elasticity contribute to overall hair health and hydration.

During the harsh winter months, we recommend using the Healthy Hair Golden Oil which is infused with Hibiscus and Turmeric and contains Baobab Oil which is key for helping your hair regulate temperatures. Warm the oil by putting the metal bottle in a bowl of boiling water for 5 minutes. Using the pipette, apply the oil to your hair and scalp, and leave it on for an hour. You can wrap your hair in a warm towel or use a shower cap then shampoo and condition your hair as usual.
Consider your hair type and its specific needs. Some oils work better for certain hair types. For example, thicker and coarser hair may benefit from heavier oils like castor or olive oil, while lighter oils such as argan or jojoba may be more suitable for fine hair.

Protective Styling
Protective hairstyles offer a multifaceted approach to maintaining curly hair hydration. They provide a protective shield against harsh environmental elements, such as cold winds and severe weather, minimising moisture loss. Secondly, these styles involve less hair manipulation, reducing the risk of moisture depletion and breakage, which is especially advantageous for those with curly or textured hair. Lastly, If you've been wearing your hair out or subjecting it to various styling products and tools, protective styles provide an opportunity for your hair to recover and regain its natural moisture balance.

Here are some videos of great protective styles to wear.
Don't forget to use smooth materials such as silk or satin to cover or tie the hair. These materials create less friction than cotton or other rough textiles, which can help retain moisture in the hair. Less friction means less moisture loss.

Wash Day TLC
Well-hydrated hair begins with clean hair. Sticking to a consistent wash day schedule is of great importance, and using quality products can make a significant difference, especially during the winter. This is the season to give your hair some TLC. As you progress through the week, adding oils and creams to keep your curls hydrated and moisturised, it's an ideal opportunity to truly enhance your wash day winter routine. When it comes to choosing a shampoo for the winter, opt for sulfate-free options specially formulated to be moisturising. These shampoos are kinder to your hair as they don't strip away as many natural oils, helping to maintain essential moisture. In winter, it's essential to strike the right balance for your hair's needs, as shampooing too frequently can result in over-drying and a loss of hydration. Prioritise quality over quantity to ensure your hair remains well-nourished and properly cared for.
Using a cowash can be a lot more gentle for your hair but washing your hair too much during winter can make your hair fragile and prone to breakage.
